Wildflowers of New York

Blue Cohosh

A photographic collection and brief reference to help identify Wildflowers found in New York

Blue Cohosh
- Caulophyllum thalictroides

Barberry Family

The dark almost black sprout as it unfurls is eerie looking. At a glance it appears as if alien hands are reaching out from under the ground. The plant will turn green once it leafs out. The leaves are similar to meadow rue and it was given its species name because of the resemblance. The flowers are replaced by berries that start out green and turn dark blue with maturity.

Found: Rich moist woods
Height: 1 - 3 feet
April - June bloom time
