Wildflowers of New York

Purple Loosestrife

A photographic collection and brief reference to help identify Wildflowers found in New York

Purple Loosestrife
- Lythrum salicaria

Loosestrife Family
Naturalized alien - garden escapee

An invasive plant that takes advantage of disturbed soils. I've read the seeds can stay viable for nearly 100 years. Imagine how large the deposit they can make over time to the soil's seed bank.

Found: Swamps, wet meadows/thickets, shorelines, roadside ditches
Height: 2 - 4 feet
June - Sept bloom time
